Club History
The Ranelagh Club was established in 1927 as a consequence of the subdivision of the Ranelagh estate. Originally, membership of this club was extremely exclusive one had to be an owner of land within the Ranelagh estate. It has only been in recent years that the membership eligibility has been extended to any local, Melbourne resident who has the best interests of the Club at heart. A short history of the Ranelagh estate and the Club has been published and is available from the office.
The Club is an incorporated association, and its directors (Committee members and Executive) are elected from the membership, Elections are usually held in October of each year. Sub-Committees are also formed for specific purposes e.g. tennis, yachting, social, etc, and are chaired by a member of the main Committee. Members with particular skills or interests are always welcome to participate. The Committee is responsible for the overall direction of the Club including budget allocations; Club management is responsible, within delegations, for the day-to-day operation of the Club.
Applications for membership are usually made through existing Club members who propose and second persons for membership. New residents, who may not know any existing Club members, are invited to discuss their application with a member of Committee or Club management. All applications for membership must be formally approved by Committee before membership is granted.
